EMEC Fall of Warness

EMEC’s Fall of Warness tidal test site is west of Eday in Orkney and is one of the world’s principal tidal-energy test locations.

Development status: EMEC is pursuing consent for up to 50 MW of tidal capacity. See the Fall of Warness facility page.

Why the site is useful: The established test infrastructure makes Fall of Warness particularly valuable for demonstrating turbines in real tidal flow, testing installation and retrieval procedures, assessing reliability and performance, and collecting environmental-monitoring evidence. Its planned scale-up also provides a bridge between single-device testing and array-scale development.

Site challenges: As an active multi-berth test site, development must coordinate devices, subsea infrastructure, navigation, environmental monitoring, and access within a high-energy flow environment.
