EMEC Shapinsay Sound

EMEC Shapinsay Sound is a proposed scale tidal-test site in the waters between mainland Orkney and Shapinsay.

Development status: The site has been assessed as a scale tidal-test location. See the project record.

Why the site is useful: A scale test site can support staged deployment of multiple devices or a small array, giving developers a setting to test array interactions, subsea electrical infrastructure, installation methods, and environmental monitoring before commercial deployment. It is also useful for validating resource and environmental models against focused field campaigns.

Site challenges: Development must balance energy-resource assessment, environmental baseline characterisation, navigation, and the constraints of a multi-user channel. Available site data are limited, making baseline surveys and targeted measurements particularly important before deployment.
