EMEC Stronsay Firth

Stronsay Firth is a proposed tidal-energy development area in eastern Orkney.

Development status: The site was announced by EMEC, but there is no active development and it does not appear to remain under EMEC’s control. See EMEC’s development-site announcement.

Why the site is useful: The site remains a useful planning case for a future Orkney array-development location. It highlights the work needed to move from a site announcement to a deployable project: updated metocean and resource surveys, environmental assessment, consenting, grid planning, and developer commitment.

Site challenges: Any future development would need to re-establish site control, consenting, and a current resource and environmental evidence base before progressing to deployment.
