Ness of Duncansby¶
Ness of Duncansby lies at the eastern entrance to the Pentland Firth, close to Stroma.
Development status: Lease options have been agreed at different times, but there is no current development. See the Ness of Duncansby project record.
Why the site is useful: The site is a valuable test case for hydrodynamic models and array layout studies in a complex headland flow. It allows the effects of coherent, large-scale flow structures on resource estimates and device loading to be examined before deployment.
Site challenges: Large-scale vortices shed from Stroma can pass through the site, creating highly variable flow conditions for turbine loading and array layout. Available site data are limited, increasing the importance of targeted measurements for resource characterisation and model validation.
